Is foot care provided by a Registered Nurse covered by OHIP?

No. OHIP does not cover private nursing foot care services provided by Registered Nurses.

However, many clients are able to receive reimbursement through their extended health benefits. Nursing foot care services may also qualify as a medical expense for Canadian income tax purposes. We recommend checking with your insurance provider or tax professional for details specific to your situation.

Is nursing foot care covered by extended health benefits?

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for foot care services performed by a Registered Nurse (RN).

Coverage varies between insurance providers and individual plans, so we recommend contacting your insurer before your appointment to confirm your eligibility and reimbursement amount.

What information will be included on my receipt?

After your appointment, you will receive an official receipt that includes:

  • Provider name
  • Registered Nurse (RN) registration number
  • Date of service
  • Description of service provided
  • Amount paid

This information is typically required for insurance reimbursement and tax purposes.

Can nursing foot care services be claimed on my Canadian income tax return?

In many cases, yes. Nursing services provided by a licensed healthcare professional may qualify as an eligible medical expense for the Medical Expense Tax Credit.

To help support your claim:

  • Services must be provided by a licensed healthcare professional, such as an RN, RPN, LPN, or NP.
  • You must keep your official receipt.
  • Only expenses that have not been reimbursed by insurance can be claimed.

For specific tax advice, please consult the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or your tax professional.

Which insurance providers do you work with?

Foot Care Canada Registered Nurses are registered providers with:

  • Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC)
  • Medavie Blue Cross
  • Green Shield Canada

Many other extended health insurance providers may also cover nursing foot care services, depending on your individual policy and benefit package. Coverage may be available under nursing services, private-duty nursing, diabetic foot care benefits, or through a Health Care Spending Account (HCSA).

Coverage varies significantly between plans, even within the same insurance company. We recommend contacting your insurer before your appointment to confirm your specific coverage, eligibility requirements, and reimbursement amount.

If you are unsure what questions to ask your insurance provider, we would be happy to help guide you.

Do you offer direct billing?

At this time, Foot Care Canada does not offer direct billing.

Payment is due at the time of service, and a detailed receipt will be provided for you to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
